Weekend Recap: Brunch, New Friend & Fatman Scoop

This past Saturday I was out to brunch with my two friends Claudia & Aleah at Harlem Tavern. We were out to meet a new friend, Tania.

While Claudia, Aleah & I were waiting for Tania to arrive we met DJ Fatman Scoop. He got in our business a little bit asking where we were from and then we took some pics. Funny dude indeed. Meting him made my day a little bit more exciting. Check out his t-shirt.

I had the Salmon Flatbread with a side of real bacon. Not no turkey bacon. -_-

Brunch done. Belly full.

I loved meeting Tania. She's a funny girl & I definitely wanna hang with her again. It was great seeing Aleah again after so many months. A little about the girls:

Aleah: is a makeup artist & owner/CEO of her very own makeup line Haviic Cosmetics.

Tania: is a TV producer, celebrity interviewer, emcee & all around entertainer. Check her out at Tania On The Scene.

Claudia: is a jewelry designer & owner of Unusual Star Jewelry.

Me: Well you know what I do but I'll say it again. I'm a handbag designer, seamstress & owner of Moruka Designs Handbags. :-)

After that Claudia & I roamed the streets of Harlem from Michaels to Yogurtland to Home Goods & back to Michaels till night fall. Because Claudia didn't want to go back in her house.

Canadian Tuxedo - Denim on Denim

I've been obsessed with this ever since Photog Jennifer told me that the name for denim on denim was the Canadian Tuxedo.

What I Wore: Youtube Unplugged Concert

In my last post I did a recap of the Youtube Unplugged Concert which was in celebration of the first ever 2013 Youtube Music Awards. Now here's what I wore.

It's still Summer in my head so I wore this yellow striped shirt I bought in April to bring some sunshine into my life. I tied it with my dark thrifted jeans, dark blue blazer, brown ankle boots, and brown zipper clutch for a Fall look. NYC was a nice 71 degrees that day so I only had to wear my black leather jacket with no sweater layer. Awesome!! I finished off with the purple lippie that was giving me any and all kinds of life that day.

I snapped some photos of my outfit of the day real quick before I left. I'm pretty sure that was why I was late for the concert and missed Chescaleigh's performance(yes, I'm still mad about it). But I couldn't NOT take photos before I left. That would just be wrong. In hindsight, I should have dressed earlier.

The Mora Clutch Worn 3 Ways

I’m always looking for different ways to style my Moruka Designs Mora Clutch and I've come up with 3 so far. I like to pair it with contrasting colours to make it really pop. First there was the Unsual Star Jewelry Trunk Show in April. I went neutral and let the clutch stand out.

Then this pink Forever 21 dress and nude shoes. I thought it would be awesome to wear them together with the clutch for a Mother's Day Fashion show.

And lastly, I stumbled upon some high waisted denim shorts I bought back in ‘05 or ‘06. I wore it with this cute yellow & cream shirt and nude shoes then let the Mora Clutch do it's thing again. 

I didn't realize until recently that I had worn this clutch with three different outfits already. This is actually one of my favorites from my line. Who would have thought that this fabric that I bought three years ago near Fort Hamilton to attempt making a dress(that was never made) would turn into something so totally unexpected and beautiful? The clutch is actually named after Mora Street; a street in my childhood neighbourhood in Guyana. Don't really know why I picked the name, it just popped in my head a couple weeks after making it. I like it. :-)

I'm officially back

This is my new jam!

So I'm back like fo' real fo' reals. I've wanted to come back but was craving a new direction and now I think I've found it. This blog was started to document my hair journey transitioning to natural hair and along the way I learned that I'm not just about my hair. I've discovered new talents, gotten into business, learned how to thrift shop(and my wardrobe thanks me for.it), interacted with bloggers online and in person, etc.


Blogging has really helped me grow and with that being said I'd like to turn Guyanesesista.com into more than just a hair blog. I want to share more with my readers. It will be a bit more of a lifestyle blog. Hence the new tagline: "The Woman, her hair & three sewing machines".There will still be hair posts but also event, DIY, outfit of the day(I notice that every once in a while I surprise myself), thrift store alterations,etc. There will also be a new layout in the near future.
