#NYTough Comedy Showcase
![]() |
| From left: Michael Che, Sherrie Shephard, Michelle Buteau, Marlon Wayans |
On Tuesday September 23rd I had the pleasure of attending Procter and Gamble's #NYTough Comedy Showcase hosted by comedy legend Marlon Wayans. This event was all about sharing how tough New Yorkers are, sharing stories and how that resonates with the great P & G products that make our lives easier while touching on the typical New York struggles like traffic jams, crazy people in the street, tough neighbourhoods, the subway system and so much more. P & G highlighted 7 of their best products which included Crest, Febreeze, Dawn, Secret Deodorant, Head & Shoulders, Tide and Bounty. Along with Marlon Wayans we were graced by the presence of 3 other comedy legends namely Sherrie Shephard, Michelle Buteau & Michael Che. It was an evening of laughs from all 4 comedians while they shared their experiences growing up using the products; like Marlon taking a bath with Dawn growing up and still having good skin because of how gentle it is. After a busy, tiring but exciting & productive day, this was the perfect way to end it. I really can't tell who was the funniest as everybody came from a different perspective but I can give some highlights.
Marlon Wayans talked about growing up in the Chelsea projects, it's re-gentrification and how it's now longer gangsta to say you grew up there because it's no longer that rough and tumble place he grew up in.
Sherrie Shephard talked being on The View, leaving The View and how when you know you're about to get fired so you get nervous and start to steal stuff. (it's so true!)

| Michelle Buteau |
Michelle Buteau talked about her Haitian heritage, being broke and her Dutch husband who she referred to as "vintage European". That was one of the funniest things & totally came from left field. I LOVED IT!!!!!
Michael Che talked about what he would be doing if he wasn't doing comedy & really couldn't think of anything. He also talked about school & a friend being in debt for $80,000 over English degree & now teaching English because it's really the only thing one could do with an English degree.
My recollection doesn't do justice to what these comedians did on that stage but I did my best. It was one if those 'You had to be there' moments. This was a brilliant way for P & G to connect with loyal customers who grew up using their products. The nostalgia made for a great overall experience that has instilled even more brand loyalty.

Caribbean Blogger Meetup Summer 2014
When I attended Blogging While Brown NYC 2014 I met some fellow Caribbean bloggers so I had the idea to reach out to them as well as some more out and have ourselves a little meetup. Last Saturday myself along with Molina, Alysia, Adanna, and Kerry-Ann met up at Central Park for de shindig. It was nice havin' a gaff with the Caribbean ladies. We all blog about different things like parenting, Caribbean issues, health care, fashion, hair, etc. This was all about a few folks with Caribbean backgrounds; whether they were born there or born here to Caribbean parents; gathering to chat about being a Caribbean blogger in New York and really the rest of the United States. We also talked about stuff like relationships, parents, work life, school and a bunch of other stuff. Basically we had damn good time. We're definitely going to have another meetup.
I took the Chubby and Alysia took the mango.
Kerry-Ann was saying something important.
And then we took a selfie and went home.

RECAP: Blogging While Brown 2014 - NYC
Friday June 27th & 28th marked the 7th annual Blogging While Brown Conference which was founded by the awesome Gina McCauley. It took place at the Schomberg Center for African American Research in Harlem, NYC. This was my first time attending(after a couple of failed attempts). It was a two day conference with a pre-conference session from about 8am to 3pm on Friday. The conference started at 4pm on Friday and continued through Saturday(8am to 6pm). Breakfast and lunch were provided on Saturday along with an after party on each day at Aloft Hotel in Harlem, NYC.
Now let's get down to business. I don't have notes for everything so I'm sharing what I can in no particular order. (I may do a part 2 when I get my other notes together)
"YEEZY TAUGHT US"
What did Yeezy teach us? Well, that you can do what you want to as long as you set your mind to it. Will Hatcher and Sheively Buisson took us through moments in Kanye West's life where his "genius" was portrayed and highlighted the fact that every time he said he was going to do something great, he would actually accomplish it. Because he has great confidence in himself, he refuses to settle for what society thinks he should be like. I can dig it. I totally get where they are coming from and I can feel their passion. (I wish I was able to catch the whole class, I only caught half.) So if you want to be the greatest blogger in the whole damn universe or become an authority in your niche take the steps necessary and follow through. Get yo blog life!!
"YOU CAN'T BE SOCIAL WITHOUT MOBILE FIRST"
Kristin Bolton-Keys and Alicia Dixon taught us about the importance of having a responsive blog template. Most people are viewing blogs from their smart phones and tablets. If your template doesn't play well with these platforms i.e. slow loading, jumbled, unresponsive comment system; you can lose out on valuable engagement with readers. Here are some websites they gave us to check for responsiveness as well as some other gems:
"FAITH IN A MOBILE WORLD"
Host:
Jason Caston, Technology and Social Media Director of T.D. Jakes Ministries.
Co-hosts:
L. Michelle Smith, AT&T U.S. Diversity Corporate Communications
Chip Dizard, Ministry Multimedia Expert
Tiffani Robinson, Digital and Social Expert
This talk was based on using social media in the church. When is it appropriate to use it? How has it positively or negatively impacted churches? Where do we draw the line? At first it was frowned upon to be on your phone during church but now it's OK to take out your phone and tweet something awesome and inspirational that your pastor just said. Also there was talk of live streaming services, having a website, paying tithes electronically, reading the bible from an app on your phone or tablet as opposed to a hard copy bible, among other things. One blogger in the Q&A session who controls the social media for her church said that some of the members decided to do a Harlem Shake video that ended up going viral. The general theme was that social media has been great for churches but there are some things that need to be addressed over time, like when does the sharing become too much? I really enjoyed this discussion because we tend to mostly only think of social media as it applies to the secular world when it is actually just as relevant in the church.

Recap: Aldo A-List Party with Roni Simpson
![]() |
| Roni Simpson & Me |
Last Friday night I kicked off the Easter weekend at Roni Simpson's Aldo A-List Party at the 5th Avenue Aldo in NYC. It was a networking/shopping event where she was getting to know people and encouraging us to mingle with each other, while Aldo offered 15% off all purchases. I'd say it was pretty chill with a great turn out and energy plus awesome DJs playing everything from Dancehall/Reggae music from like 10 years ago or more to
current Pop/Hip Hop.

I got an invite from a friend and it was my first time hearing about Roni of TheLatestReports.com. I'm glad I met her. She was real down to earth, sweet and friendly. Originally a Cali native, she moved to NYC a year ago and I'd say she's doing a great job of fitting in. You know, throwing this sweet networking party and all. She was also SERVING in her black sequin jumper, red lips and fabulous hair!
