Homemade Mud Wash Recipe + Weekend review

So this weekend wasn't anything special. I spent it under a shower cap trying to moisturize my thirsty strands. I was having a product junkie itch and since I didn't have any intention spending much money I decided to use what I had. I settled on making a home made mud wash with the bentonite clay that has been sitting in my bathroom since '06 or '07. The only thing I had to buy was a gallon of aloe vera juice which will last a long time.

I found a recipe on Youtube at Myhairisnappy. You'll see that my recipe is a bit different from hers, I modified it based on the oils I had available and included aloe vera juice. Here is her Mud Shampoo Smoothie.

My version
1/3 cup bentonite clay
1tsp orange essential oil
1/2tsp lemon essential oil
1/2tsp grapefruit essential oil
2tsp coconut herbal oil
2tsp olive herbal oil
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup aloe vera juice

Instructions
Put clay in bowl
Add oils
Add water
Add aloe vera juice
Stir around with spatula
Pour into blender
Blend until smooth
Use and/or store in container of choice

I made this on Saturday but just used it today. I currently have it in my hair and will report on the results later.

This is what's left from today's application. I made two batches. Next time I do this I'll put it in a bottle so I can squeeze it it out and not cause a mess or risk  contamination from double dipping. Plus there were a few hairs in there. Maybe an old suave conditioner bottle will do. Clean up was not cool, there was mud everywhere. I store it in the fridge but learned in another Youtube video that it can be frozen so I'll try that out. More mud shampoo recipes here and here.

  1. Does the ACV cause the hair to feel stripped? I've seen the other recipe that contains oils and I'd like to make one using both ACV and oils. What do you think of mixing the two? Why do you use ACV in your recipe? Thank you for your help since I'm new to this whole mud wash thing, lol.

  2. @Mommyg05 thanks for stopping by.

I didn't use ACV(Apple Cider Vinegar) in my recipe, I used AVJ(Aloe Vera Juice) which helps to balance the pH of my hair{doesn't strip my hair}. So unfortunately I can't give you an experienced opinion on adding ACV(apple cider vinegar) to the recipe. However, my guess is that maybe it depends on how much you use, like no more than 1/2 or 1 tablespoon to the entire batch.

Apple cider vinegar can also be used to balance pH{1 tablespoon to 64oz water for either high or low porosity hair, I tend to forget which one}. I suggest you look around concerning that.

  4. Is the texture of this shampoo like a heavy lotion or more like a chunky butter (think raw shea butter)? I don't want to use a blender for this so I thought I'd use hot water in order to get the clay to completely dissolve. I also wanted to package in into a shampoo bottle. It'll work fine if it's like a lotion but if it's like butter than I'd need a jar. I'd just like to know before I purchase a container. Thanks!

  5. @Jennica - Thanks for stopping by. It's more like a heavy lotion. I've thought about putting it on a squeeze bottle but laziness has it still in the bowl. Let me know how it turns out for you.

  6. Does this mud wash go down the sink well? I know water dilutes the clay enough, but I want to make sure that I won't get in trouble for clogging my drain (I rent) if it is prone to hardening. Thanks!

  7. ^^ Hi thanks for stopping by. It seems to wash down fine for me. I've only used it once since I've made it but it dilutes very well when being washed out. You should not have any problems.
